Product review: BlackBerry® Pearl™ 3G smartphone

Blackberry, One on One e-newsletter, Onestream, Smartphones, mobile email, vodafone No Comments

Unlike many other manufacturers,Research In Motion® (RIM) do not release dozens of new handsets per year, so when a new model appears you can be sure that the new device is designed to bring something different to the market, be fit for purpose and impressive.

The BlackBerry Pearl 9105 smartphone is RIM’s smallest BlackBerry smartphone to date, it’s light compact and stylish. It clearly continues along the same lines as it’s successful predecessors, however, many subtle yet important features have been changed to bring it straight up-to-date. Like with all new BlackBerry smartphones, the trackball has been replaced with the more robust trackpad. The handset no longer has a half QWERTY keyboard, instead RIM have opted for an alpha-numeric keyboard which won’t alienate users wanting a traditional shaped handset whilst also wanting the benefits of a push email device. Regardless of whether you have previously used a BlackBerry device or not, it’s incredibly easy to get to grips with. An improved 2.25” TFT screen provides great resolution making good use of the email, web and app functions. The handset also has 3G and Wi-FI connectivity commonly only found on higher end handsets. The camera has been upgraded to 3.15mp with auto focus, flash and video. Impressively the processor has also been upgraded to 624 MHz, again the same as the BlackBerry Bold 9700 device.

Despite the improvements, RIM haven’t removed anything which made the original BlackBerry Pearl device so good. GPS, BlackBerry® Maps, expandable memory, document editor, all the right features are present and correct.

The BlackBerry Pearl 9105 smartphone has been designed to fill the gap between the standard candy bar and the slightly larger QWERTY keyboard BlackBerry handsets. It does it very well and will cater for an individuals needs in or out of the workplace. It’s a well priced handset, and for anyone who wants all the fantastic features that a BlackBerry device can provide yet with a little more space in their pocket, the BlackBerry Pearl 9105 smartphone is definitely worth more than just a little consideration.
