Come and visit us at Digital Simple on 16th September 9.30am-4pm at OPEN, Bank Plain, Norwich.

This year Vodafone in association with OneStream (Vodafone Premier Partner) will be sponsors at Digital Simple, Norfolk’s largest digital event.

Organised by the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, the conference comprises three tracks of presentations with specialist workshops and an exhibition running in tandem. The event has been staged to provide a platform for the complex and hi-tech digital and IT industry, and visitors will be able to find out everything they need to know about email and internet, mobile phones, Cloud computing, security, the latest software and hardware, plus a wealth of other related areas of technology.

Caroline Williams, CEO of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, said: “The digital and IT industry is a vital growth area in Norfolk, but it is highly complex, fast moving and there is a bewildering array of equipment in the market. The Norfolk Chamber understands that businesses need guidance, advice and the inside track on what the future holds. “Digital Simple will clearly explain the available technology to help businesses make informed decisions about how to invest as cost effectively as possible. This in turn will enable them to reach new customers and increase business.”

Digital Simple is ideal for everyone in business, but particularly those who need to know the capability and cost of major IT investment, or IT managers looking to unify platforms and improve efficiencies.

Phil Rider, Chairman at OneStream said “We are delighted to be sponsoring an event with such an emphasis on the products and services we offer. This is a great way for businesses of Norfolk to learn more about day-to-day technologies such as mobile, fixed line and IT solutions that can help to improve efficiency and productivity of their business whilst delivering real cost savings. It is also a great opportunity to introduce new technologies to further improve the way we work, and I look forward to introducing our new converged communication offering – Vodafone One Net”

Digital Simple is free to attend and we would be delighted if you would come along and see us there.

We will have a stand running throughout the day and don’t miss our 30 minute presentation slot in which we will be introducing our new converged communication offering – Vodafone One Net.

On Monday 12 July, we hosted our annual Golf Day Event in aid of the Big C Charity ’30 for 30’ fundraising initiative; 30 businesses have each committed to raising £5,000 for the Big C in its 30th year. OneStream hit that target in one day raising a total of £5,025! The event which included 18 holes of golf at Sprowston Manor, followed by a three course meal and entertainment provided by comedian Russ Williams used sponsorship opportunities, a raffle and an auction with some exclusive items up for grabs to help achieve this sum.

Raffle prizes ranged from Paintballing, mobile phones and phone accessories to a blu-ray player, a helicopter lesson and a Wii. But, the evening got interesting as bidders went head to head to buy auction  items  including; two exclusive tickets to the home of the Vodafone McLaren team – TheMcLaren Technology Centre –a once  in a life time opportunity kindly donated by Vodafone VIP, a Replica World Cup football signed by Sir Alex Ferguson and other footballers, an Armani Watch courtesy of Data Select, Fourball at Sprowston Manor courtesy of Sprowston Manor, Kelling Heath Holiday vouchers courtesy of Kelling Heath, a Golf bag signed by William Hunt & Bryan Gunn and a signed golf flag from Sir Alex Ferguson’s golf classic.

Sharon Hulbert, PR and Corporate Fundraising Relations Manager for Big C, said “We are absolutely delighted with the amount raised at Onestream’s Golf Day. Everyone there supported the charity by buying raffle tickets and by making some amazing bids in the auction. Onestream are one of Big C’s 30 for 30 business supporters and they have achieved their pledge for the year in just one day so a big thank you to those who organised the event. BlackBerry v5.0 – What it means?

Sometime ago we installed Blackberry Enterprise Server (Version 5) from our original Blackberry Professional Server system (4.x).

Here’s a few things you can expect in terms of the key improvements in end user functionality. First things first, you need to be running with a recent BlackBerry ie a Bold, Bold2, Storm, Storm2, 8520 to benefit from all of the new features. That’s not to say it won’t work with older BlackBerry handsets, it does… however you may miss out on some of the more interesting newer features.

Improved email graphics

HTML emails – If you’ve ever used a BlackBerry, you will know that all emails are text based, meaning they don’t look like they do when you view them in Outlook on your computer.

The new version 5 BlackBerry server system does have this capability, so emails you receive and send will look very much the same as if you were using Outlook and certainly as the sender intended them to look.

Public Folder Access – Ever used these in Outlook? These are now accessible on BlackBerry devices with v5. Our B2B Account Managers have said that this is a common ‘want’ from customers for sometime. In the past, if you wanted public folder access, then you would have needed to attach the BlackBerry to the pc via a cable to sync it.

Network access – In short, this means that when you are out of the office you will be able to access files and folders on the server. This is handset dependent, only Bold 2 and Storm2 have the system ‘out of the box’, the other handsets may need a software update, depending on the device you are using.

For example, in our business, it means that all our B2B team are able to access the ‘B2B drive’ on the servers and open, edit or forward on via email ANY document such as an OCF, PDFor Word document that we currently store on servers at our head office.

Outlook folders – Normally you would be able to view your full outlook folder structure on a blackberry, however now you can create, edit or delete these folders.

Outlook Flags – For the super organised who use ‘Flags’ to organise Outlook messages by colours/importance, this is now available on the blackberry devices also.

Windows Media files – Not a business critical upgrade, however you can now listen to Windows media files on your device (as opposed to standard MP3 files).

So the verdict… well worth considering.

As an IT professional working in the mobile industry. I come across many many new applications and systems that I would consider to be impressive/cool or great to have -  however the increased efficiency that I have seen within our own business from running  Blackberry 5 is already proving to be one of those things we cannot do without.

One more point to note out, this system is the full enterprise system, known as BES. What we generally install or support our customers with is known at BPS and unfortunately many of these new features are not available on BPS, however we believe these enhanced features mean it is well worth considering the upgrade to BES 5.
