Frozen Britain Freezing your Productivity?

Remote working No Comments

Remote Working – Written by Phil Rider

Looking out this morning on 6 inches of snow and watching the news which, as usual, shows the country at a standstill with any weather that is remotely out of the ordinary, I am struck by one message over and over….. Don’t travel unless absolutely necessary.

Cars are piled up at the roadside the length and breadth of the country, whilst others skate across ice covered surfaces with all the elegance of a drunken Hippo, and everyone displays that peculiar British spirit always evident in a crisis.

I make a quick decision; I will not join the throng, but instead, as I have no meetings today, will work from home. This is not so startling, as our company has a great remote operating system, which enables me and many of my colleagues to operate from anywhere as if we are sat at our desks.

I simply click on an icon on my laptop using the home broadband facility, though I could, as an alternative use my Vodafone Data card for 3G speeds, and I am connected to my office via a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This is fully password protected and so, secure, taking only a few seconds to connect me.

At this point I am prompted to click another icon called remote desktop, and within another couple of seconds, I am presented with my normal desktop view I would have were I sat behind my desk. As I tend to access most of my files from the backup on server, I am straight into them and able to carry on where I left off yesterday, all with total security.

At the same time my Blackberry is chirping away constantly with the latest emails, so I can switch between screens and attend to them whilst continuing working. Making phone calls is not an issue on my home phone, as my Blackberry is on a Vodafone Total Business tariff, which offers unlimited free calls to UK landlines, as well as free mobile to mobile calls to all our Company phones, so I can make all the calls I need, without costing me anything over and above our monthly call plan.

In many ways I am enjoying my day working remotely. Without other people and phones ringing, I am actually getting more done, and whilst I would never under estimate the social value of working in an office environment, this is undoubtedly a very efficient way to work whilst the weather is so poor.

Perhaps you should review the way your Company communications operate and see if OneStream cannot get you working even more efficiently than you do now.
